INTRODUCTION:

Tonbridge Grammar School, established in 1905, is a selective academy for girls known for its academic excellence. Located on a 14-acre campus in Deakin Leas, the school features modern facilities for science, drama, and sports. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Tonbridge Grammar integrates a traditional curriculum with the innovative, inquisitive spirit of the IB program.

The school's mission is to foster cultural development and inspire students to contribute positively to the world. Students have opportunities to participate in study tours to Malawi and Iceland, as well as engage in mathematics challenges throughout the UK and Europe.

ADMISSION GUIDELINES:

Tonbridge Grammar School is a selective institution, requiring students to pass the Kent Test, also known as the 11 plus exam, to qualify for admission.

Oversubscription Criteria:

·       Up to 135 spots are available for girls who pass the Kent Test and reside in the priority area. Admission is based on the total exam score, with proximity to the school used as a tiebreaker.

·       35 spots are available for girls who pass the Kent Test but live outside the priority area. Admission is determined by their total exam score, with proximity to the school serving as a tiebreaker.

·       Up to 15 places are reserved for girls who are eligible for Pupil Premium.

·       In the case of a tie, the distance from the school will be considered to determine admission.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Registration for the 2024 Kent Test opens in early June and closes in early July, with the exam scheduled for September and results available in mid-October. To apply for a place at Tonbridge Grammar School, you must list it as a preferred school on the secondary school common application form, available on your home council's website from early September and due by October 31, 2024. Note that passing the 11 plus does not guarantee admission, as grammar schools often have more qualified applicants than available places, and schools use specific admissions criteria to prioritize students.

CATHCHMENT AREA:

Tonbridge Grammar School's admissions policy gives priority to children residing in the Tonbridge and Malling Borough, Tunbridge Wells Borough, or Sevenoaks District. If there are more applicants than places, the school uses proximity to the school as a tiebreaker, with distance measured in a straight line from the child's home address to the school.

EXAM FORMAT:

Children applying to Tonbridge Grammar School take the Kent Test, which is administered by GL Assessment and comprises two one-hour multiple-choice papers. The first paper assesses English and Maths based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum, while the second evaluates verbal, non-verbal, and spatial reasoning—areas not typically covered in school.

PREPARATION AND TARGET TEST SCORES:

To help your child prepare for selective school entrance exams like Tonbridge Grammar School's 11 plus entry, focus on several key strategies. Implement a "little and often" approach to learning with short, regular study sessions to build a strong knowledge base. Encourage wide reading across various genres to enhance vocabulary and analytical skills. Foster curiosity by discussing current events and providing diverse learning experiences through visits to educational sites. Use mock tests to refine exam techniques and address any knowledge gaps. Finally, celebrate progress and maintain a growth mindset, emphasizing effort and resilience in the face of challenges.

After the exam, your child will get three standardized scores: one for English, one for Mathematics, and a combined score that includes Reasoning. To pass, they need to achieve a standardized score above 109 in each subject and a total score of at least 332.
